Spring Allergies – Pollen Is Probably To Blame!
Spring has sprung early and so have allergies!
Springtime brings green grass, warm days, and long walks outside with your best friend!
But, for both 2 and 4 legged revelers this wonderful time of year can be ruined by allergies.
Why do some people and dogs have allergies and some don’t?
There are a lot of theories, but the most common are…
- Genetics, since allergies often run in families
- Repeated exposure to an allergen
- Some scientists theorize that it may have something to do with immunizations given at an early age
- Weak immune system
Right now it is all about high levels of pollen caused by the unseasonably warm and early spring!
The earliest spring pollens are the tree pollens, followed by grass pollen – which lasts into the summer. (Interestingly, flower pollen is usually not a problem — and neither is very large-sized pollen, such as pine tree pollens.)
Typically a dog’s allergy symptoms will include:
- Watery eyes
- Sneezing
- Biting, scratching and chewing — usually their feet and the bends of the arms
Want to find out if pollen is your pet’s enemy?
Do a little bit of sleuthing. Every day search for local weather information that includes an allergy report which identifies different pollen counts for that day. By tracking the daily pollen count along with your dog’s symptoms, you may get a good idea of exactly what’s causing the allergy.
Treatment for pet allergies is similar to the treatment for humans, but always consult with a vet before taking any action. Some treatments may be safe for you, but not for your pet.
Other things you can do to help your pet:
- Give supplements to support a healthy immune system
- Fit your home with air filters
- Spend limited time outdoors during allergy season
- After taking your dog outdoors, wipe them down with a cold wet cloth or brush them (gently, but firmly) to remove pollen from their fur and paws
- Keep all surfaces clean
- Vacuum rugs
- Wash pet linen regularly
