A Pet’s Guide to Spring Cleaning

As the seasons change and the weather begins to warm up, it is our duty as pet parents to keep our pets healthy. While the winter months may have kept us cooped up indoors with our four-legged friends sometimes longer than necessary, spring is around the corner to help us alleviate that burden. However, before we swap out our pup’s snowshoes for a sunhat, we must first remove those pesky winter germs with a spring cleaning frenzy. Not only will our homes be ready for the changing seasons, but so will our furry friends as they spend more time outdoors and less time cuddled up inside.

1. Pack up their winter clothes. Like humans, pets may also have some winter clothes that need to be stored away once the seasons change. Be sure to read the labels on these items to properly clean them. When washing them, either by hand or in the machine, use a small amount of unscented laundry detergent. If for some reason you find an article that requires dry cleaning, make sure to allot enough time to properly air out the clothing item before it is packed away. When you are ready to store them, use a clean storage container in a dry area of your home. It is important to avoid damp storage areas to eliminate unwanted mold.
2. Wash your pet’s accessories. Spring is the perfect time to set new goals for yourself and your pet. Start by creating a schedule of how often you will clean their dishes and their toys. Most pet bowls and pet toys are dishwasher or washing machine safe. Pick a day once a week or every other week to keep your purring pal’s accessories clean as the weather continues to heat up.
3. A clean create equals a happy pup. Similar to setting up a schedule to clean your pet’s accessories, the same can be done for their crate or carrier. While you may need one initial deep cleaning session, every week you should follow up by wiping down these areas with warm soapy water. Avoid using disinfectants as they may irritate your four-legged friend’s respiratory system. Be sure to thoroughly wipe down the areas and allow them to fully air dry before allowing your pet to return to their safe space.
